… air a bheil …

… who has …

We saw earlier the phrase ‘S e fear mòr àrd tapaidh Albannach a th’ ann air an robh coltas gruamach greannach. This is a clàs roimhearach (prepositional clause), a clause introduced by a preposition, in this example air (on). To form these clauses we use the preposition, followed by a bheil | nach eil (present tense), an robh | cha robh (past tense) and am bi | nach bi (future tense).

‘S e fear àrd a th’ ann air a bheil ceann mòr

He’s a tall man with a big head [on whom is a big head]

‘S e sin an taigh anns an robh pàrtaidh Oidhche Shathairne

That’s the house in which there was a party on Saturday night

‘S e seo an duine aig nach eil airgead sam bith

This is the person who has no money [at whom isn’t any money]

Gnàthas–cainnte/seanfhacal

Ceann mòr air duine glic is ceann circe air amadan.

A great head on a wise man and a hen’s head on a fool.
