(Hello Elsie, how are you?)

ELSIE

MÀRTAINN

(Yes. This is Ailis, a friend of Mum’s. Ailis, this is Elsie, our neighbour.)

AILIS

Halò Elsie. Tha mi toilichte coinneachadh ribh.

(Hello Elsie. I’m pleased to meet you.)

ELSIE

Halò Ailis. A bheil thu ag obair còmhla ri Màiri?

(Hello Ailis. Do you work with Màiri?)

AILIS

(Do you sing?)

ELSIE

‘S toil leam ceòl ach chan e tidsear no neach-ciùil a th’ annam. ‘S e obraiche sòisealta a bh’ annam. Chan eil mi ag obair a-nise.

(I like music but I’m not a teacher or a musician. I was a social worker. I don’t work now.)

MARTAINN

A bheil sibh gam fhaicinn? ‘S e cluicheadair ball-coise a th’ annam.

(Can you see me?  I’m a football player.)

ELSIE

A Mhàrtainn, bi faiceallach! A bheil thu gam chluinntinn?

(Be careful Màrtainn!  Can you hear me?)

MÀRTAINN

A bheil sibh gam fhaicinn? ‘S e rèitire ball-coise a th’ annam.

(Can you see me?  I’m a football referee!)

AILIS

Càit an robh sibh ag obair?

(Where did you work?)

ELSIE

Bha mi ag obair ann an Dùn Èideann agus an seo ann an Glaschu.

(I was working in Edinburgh and here in Glasgow.)

AILIS

Bha mise san oilthigh ann an Obar Dheathain agus a-nise tha mi nam thidsear.

(I was at university in Aberdeen and now I’m a teacher.)

ELSIE

(My sister was a teacher.)

AILIS

A bheil ise ag obair?

(Does she work?)

ELSIE

Chan eil. Tha ise a-nise ann am Muile.

(No. She’s now in Mull.)

ELSIE

(I’m a climber.)

AILIS

Tha an t-àm agam a dhol a dh’obair!

(It’s time for me to go to work!)

(It was nice to meet you Ailis.)
