Dè nì thu?

What will you do?

Watch as Joy explains more about some of the words and phrases we saw and heard in the conversation.

JOY

Earlier on we looked at ways in which we could answer the phrase:

Dè rinn thu? What did you do? Dè rinn thu?

Now we’ll move on from the past tense to the future tense:

Dè nì thu? What will you do? Dè nì thu?

Or if you’re talking about more than one person:

Dè nì sinn? What will we do. Dè nì sinn?

If you’re with friends and trying to plan what to do at the weekend, you could say:

Dè nì sinn / air an deireadh‑sheachdain?

What will we do at the weekend? Dè nì sinn air an deireadh‑sheachdain?

Or to specify a particular day:

Dè nì sinn / Disathairne?

What will we do on Saturday? Dè nì sinn Disathairne?

You may also want to make some suggestions. To do that, you can use the phrase:

An tèid sinn…? Will we go..? An tèid sinn..?

For example, if you wanted to go to the cinema:

An tèid sinn / dhan taigh‑dhealbh?

Will we go to the cinema? An tèid sinn dhan taigh‑dhealbh?

Now, we respond to An tèid…? questions positively with:

Thèid Will go… thèid

Or the negative:

Cha tèid Won’t go… Cha tèid

So if you do decide to go to the cinema, you say:

Thèid sinn / dhan taigh‑dhealbh. We’ll go to the cinema. Thèid sinn dhan taigh‑dhealbh.

Or if you decided not to go:

Cha tèid sinn / dhan taigh‑dhealbh. We won’t go to the cinema. Cha tèid sinn dhan taigh‑dhealbh.

You can use the same structure to make alternative suggestions, for example:

An ith sinn / ann an taigh‑bìdh? Will we eat in a restaurant? An ith sinn ann an taigh‑bìdh?

Or if you’re making arrangements to travel:

An gabh sinn / tacsaidh? Will we take a taxi? An gabh sinn tacsaidh?
