Dùil is dòchas …

Expect and hope …

Dependent clauses are often introduced with common phrases such as tha mi an dòchas (I hope) and tha mi an dùil (I expect). We can also use phrases like tha eagal orm (I fear) and tha amharas agam/orm (I suspect) in this way.

Tha mi an dòchas nach fhàs cùisean nas miosa. 

I hope things won’t get worse.

Tha mi an dùil nach fhàs cùisean nas miosa.

I expect things won’t get worse.

Tha eagal orm gum fàs an t–sìde nas blàithe.

I fear the weather will get warmer.

Tha amharas agam/orm gum fàs an t–sìde nas blàithe.

I suspect the weather will get warmer.

Tha mi an dòchas nach fhàs an t–sìde nas miosa san àm ri teachd.

I hope that the weather will not get worse in the time to come.

Tha amharas agam/orm nach atharraich mòran.

I suspect that much won’t change.

Tha eagal orm gun dèan sinn cron air an àrainneachd.

I’m afraid that we will damage the environment.
