An dàrna turas: Tha mi measail air Oidhche Challainn

Take two: I am fond of Hogmanay

Let’s have a look at this conversation again.

Dè an latha-fèill as fheàrr leatsa? What’s your favourite festival/holy day/holiday?
Nuair a bha mi beag, chòrd Oidhche Shamhna rium gu mòr. Bhiodh sinn a’ cur èideadh neònach is aghaidhean–coimheach oirnn agus a’ dol timcheall nan taighean san dorchadas. Dè mu do dheidhinn–sa? When I was small, I enjoyed Halloween a lot. We’d put on strange costumes and masks and go round the houses in the dark. What about you?
Nuair a bha mise na b’ òige, ‘s e Là na Nollaige a b’ fheàrr leam. Bhiodh a h–uile duine san teaghlach còmhla. Bhiodh dinnear na Nollaig’ againn, agus bhiodh m’ athair a’ dèanamh duf na Nollaige. Làithean geala! When I was younger, Christmas Day was my favourite [it was Christmas Day I preferred]. Everyone in the family was together. We’d have Christmas dinner and my dad would make Christmas pudding. Happy days!
Tha Là na Nollaige math, ach dè mu dheidhinn Oidhche na Nollaige, nuair a bhiodh a’ chraobh air a cuairteachadh le tiodhlacan Nollaig(e), agus sinn a’ feitheamh air Bodach na Nollaig? Christmas Day is good, but what about Christmas Eve, when the tree would be surrounded with Christmas presents, and we’d be waiting for Santa Claus?
Sin e dìreach. Bha mi air sin a dhìochuimhneachadh! Bidh na daoine nas sine a’ dèanamh moladh mòr air Oidhche Challainn. Tha cuimhn’ agam mo mhàthair ag innse sgeulachdan mu na gillean Challainn a’ dol mun cuairt san sgìre againn, agus a’ faighinn bhonnaich–Challainn. That’s it exactly! I had forgotten that! The older folk praise Hogmanay. I remember my mother telling stories about the Hogmanay lads going around the area and getting Hogmanay bannocks.
Tha mi measail air Oidhche Challainn, ach na làithean seo tha e gam fhàgail brònach nuair a smaoinicheas mi air na daoine a dh’fhalbh. Dè na làithean sònraichte eile a th’ ann? Tha sinn air grunnd làithean ainmeachadh mar–thà! I am fond of Hogmanay, but these days it leaves me sad when I think of the people who are no longer with us [have left]. What are the other special days? We’ve named a fair few already!
Tha fios ’am. Nach eil e math, an dèidh do Nollaig is Bliadhn’ Ùr a bhith seachad, agus ann an dorchadas a’ gheamhraidh, beagan solais fhaighinn le Oidhche na Taigeise? Bàrdachd agus biadh! I know. Isn’t it good, after Christmas and New Year are past, and in the darkness of winter, to get a little light with Burns Night [Night of the Haggis]. Poetry and food!
Tha gu dearbh! Agus an uair sin, chan eil e fada gus an tig Là Fhèill Brìghde agus toiseach an earraich(—mas fhìor)! It is indeed! And then it’s not long until Saint Brigid’s Day comes and the beginning of spring(—as if)!
Cha mhòr nach do dhìochuimhnich mi! Dè mu dheidhinn Àm na Càisge? Dihaoine na Ceusta agus latha dheth bhon sgoil! I almost forgot! What about Easter time? Good Friday and a day off school!
Agus uair sin Didòmhnaich na Càisge. Uighean, gu h–àraid uighean seòclaid! And then Easter Sunday. Eggs, especially chocolate eggs!
Às a sin, chan eil e fada gus an tig Là Buidhe Bealltainn agus toiseach an t–samhraidh! From then it’s not long until May Day [first of May] and the beginning of summer!
