Scottish festivals 2

Why don’t you have a go at reading this section which is all about fèilltean Albannach (Scottish festivals).

Air Là Fhèill Mìcheil, fèill Chaitligeach a tha fhathast air a comharrachadh ann an cuid de sgìrean, gu sònraichte ann an Uibhist a Deas, bidh daoine a’ dèanamh bonnach, no cèic, sònraichte ris an canar Sruthan Mhìcheil. https://www.bbc.co.uk/naidheachdan/fbh/45693605

‘S dòcha gur i Oidhche na Taigeise (Burns Night), air a cumail air a’ chòigeamh latha fichead den Fhaoilleach, an fhèill Albannach as motha do mhuinntir na h–Alba. Bidh daoine ann an Alba, agus air feadh an t–saoghail, ga comharrachadh le bàrdachd, ceòl na pìoba, agus suipear thraidiseanta: taigeis, snèap is buntàta.

‘S e fèill mhòr eadar–nàiseanta a th’ ann an Oidhche Shamhna a–nis, ach ‘s e fèill Ghàidhealach a bh’ innte bho thùs. Tha cleachdaidhean traidiseanta fhathast ann an Alba agus an Èirinn. ‘S e snèap a thathar a’ cleachdadh gu traidiseanta an àite peapag airson lòchran a dhèanamh. Tha biadh ceangailte ri Oidhche Shamhna air a bheil Fuarag na Samhna. Bhathar a’ dèanamh fuarag le min–choirce is bainne, agus a’ cur fàinne no bonn airgid ann.

How did you get on?

On Saint Michael’s Day, a Catholic festival which is still celebrated in some areas, especially in South Uist, people make a special bannock, or cake, which is called a Struan cake or a ‘Saint Michael’s cake’. https://www.bbc.co.uk/naidheachdan/fbh/45693605

Burns Night, held on the twenty fifth of January, is perhaps the biggest Scottish festival for the people of Scotland. People in Scotland, and around the world, celebrate this with poetry, pipe music, and a traditional supper: haggis, neeps and tatties.

Halloween is now a big international festival, but it is a Gaelic festival originally. There are traditional practices still in Scotland and Ireland. It is a neep, a turnip or swede which was traditionally used rather than a pumpkin to make a lantern. There is a food connected with Halloween which is called Fuarag na Samhna (a Hallowmas pudding). A rough pudding was made from oatmeal and milk, and a ring or silver coin was placed in this.
