ANNDRA
A Chatrìona gabh mo leisgeul ach am faod mi ceist a chur ort?
(Catriona, excuse me but can I ask you a question?)
CATRÌONA
Faodaidh Anndra!
(You can Anndra!)
ANNDRA
An urrainn dhut bogsadh?
(Can you box?)
CATRÌONA
‘S urrainn dhomh bogsadh. Chan urrainn dhomh a dhol dhan gym cho tric an‑dràsta, tha mi ro thrang.
(I can box. I can’t go to the gym as often just now; I’m too busy.)
ANNDRA
Chan urrainn dhomh bogsadh, ach ‘s e eacarsaich mhath a th’ ann an dannsa. Bidh mi fhìn agus Carla a’ dol gu clas dannsa aig an deireadh‑seachdain.
(I can’t box, but dancing is good exercise. Carla and I go to a dancing class at the weekend.)
SEUMAS
Clas dannsa? Anndra, nach urrainn dhut dannsa?
(A dance class? Andrew, can’t you dance?)
ANNDRA
Uill, ‘s urrainn dhomh dannsa ach chan eil mi math air dannsa cèilidh.
(Well, I can dance, but I’m not good at ceilidh dancing.)
CATRÌONA
An urrainn dhutsa dannsa a Sheumais?
(Can you dance Seumas?)
SEUMAS
‘S urrainn dhomh dannsa mar Schottische a dhèanamh. Nì mi dannsa aig banais.
(I can do dances like a Scottische. I’ll dance at a wedding.)
EMMA
‘S urrainn dhòmhsa an Schottische a dhèanamh. Dh’ionnsaich mi an dannsa sin ann an Glaschu.
(I can do the Scottische. I learnt that dance in Glasgow.)
CATRÌONA
Am bi thu a dèanamh eacarsaich Emma?
(Do you exercise Emma?)
EMMA
Bithidh. ‘S urrainn dhomh ruith agus ‘s urrainn dhomh snàmh. Nuair a bha mi a’ fuireach ann an Alba bhiodh sinn a’ snàmh anns na lochan.
(I do. I can run and I can swim. When I lived in Scotland we’d swim in the lochs.)
CATRÌONA
‘S urrainn dhutsa snàmh Anndra, nach urrainn?
(You can swim Andrew, can’t you?)
ANNDRA
‘S urrainn. Tha mi math air snàmh. Bidh mi a’ snàmh anns a’ mhuir.
(I can. I’m good at swimming. I swim in the sea.)
EMMA
Tha a’ mhuir ann an Alba cho fuar. Tha thusa a’ fuireach ri taobh na mara a Sheumais. An toil leat snàmh?
(The sea in Scotland is so cold. You live beside the sea Seumas. Do you like swimming?)
ANNDRA
A Sheumais? A bheil thu gar cluinntinn? An urrainn dhut snàmh?
(Seumas? Are you hearing us? Can you swim?)
SEUMAIS
Uill, chan urrainn dhomh snàmh.

Tha thu a’ fuireach ri taobh na mara!

SEUMAS
Agus, chan urrainn dhomh snàmh. Tha mo bhean math air snàmh. Mo nighean – ‘s urrainn dhi snàmh agus mo mhac, ‘s urrainn dha snàmh. Gabh mo leisgeul Anndra, ach an urrainn dhuinn a bhith deiseil tràth?
(And I can’t swim. My wife is good at swimming. My daughter – she can swim and my son, he can swim. Excuse me Anndra, could we finish early today?)
ANNDRA
‘S urrainn dhuinn a bhith deiseil tràth. Carson?
(We can finish early. Why?)
SEUMAS
Bidh mise a’ cur na cloinne dhan amar a‑nochd!
