News report 2

How did you get on? Here is the translation.

Scotland saw the biggest increase of Covid cases in the United Kingdom last week, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It is thought that 250,700 people had the virus – one in every 20 – in the week which ended on the 17th of June. This is an increase on the numbers from the previous week, when 176,900 people had Covid, or one in every 30.

The ONS said that it looks likely that it’s the BA.4 and BA.5 strains of Omicron that are behind the new cases. It is not thought that these are more deadly than other strains of Covid, but it appears that they are spreading more quickly.

Hospitals are also saying that more people are being seen coming in with Covid, with 931 people recorded on Monday – that’s up from less than 600 at the end of May. But cases are still far lower than they were in Spring, when there were more than 2,000 patients with Covid in Scotland’s hospitals.
