Job titles

Tiotalan obrach

Like English, job titles came from the objects performed on, or the actual tasks, so we see names like  clachair, iasgair  or  sgrìobhadair  and this pattern still persists in modern job titles such as  dealbhadair.  Other jobs have gendered titles, using fear- (fear-smàlaidh, fireman) or tè (tè-smàlaidh, firewoman), but we can use the gender-neutral neach- : neach-smàlaidh (fire-person).
