Tha doimhneachd san dealbh

There is a depth in the painting

Let’s have a look at this discussion. By the end of this section, you will have learned some valuable phrases that you can use in lots of different conversations.

Dè an obair-ealain a b’ fheàrr leat anns a’ ghailearaidh ealaine? What would be your favourite work of art in the art gallery?
‘S e an dealbh le Salvador Dalí, ‘Crìosda Naomh Eòin na Croise’. Chì thu e ann an Gailearaidh Ealaine Kelvingrove ann an Glaschu. It’s the painting by Salvador Dalí, ‘ Christ of St John of the Cross’. You will see it in Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow.
Tha mi eòlach air. Tha coltas an deilbh dàna, dorcha agus doilleir. Ach, a dh’aindeoin sin, tha pìosan ann a tha gleansach, socair agus soilleir. I know it. The appearance of the picture is bold, dark and dull. But, despite that, there are parts which are lustrous, calm and bright.
Tha doimhneachd san dealbh, le iomsgaradh eadar Ìosa Crìosda anns an dorchadas aig mullach an deilbh agus solas agus am bàgh ciùin leis a’ bhàta bheag aig bonn an deilbh … There is a depth in the painting, with contrast between Jesus Christ in the darkness at the top of the picture and light and the calm bay with the little boat at the bottom of the picture …
Agus tha an taobh solais mar gum b’ e sealladh Dhè fhèin a th’ ann. And the direction of the light is as though it’s God’s own perspective.
Agus dè do bheachd air suidheachadh a bhodhaige? And what do you think about the position of his body?
Saoilidh mi gu bheil na gàirdeanan ann an triantan agus a cheann mar chearcall … a’ samhlachadh na Trianaid. I think that the arms forming a triangle and the head as a circle … symbolise the Holy Trinity.
Agus tha meud an deilbh aibheiseach: dà mheatair a dh’àirde agus còrr is meatair a leud. Tha siud mòr! Ach tha sin gu leòr bhuam! Dè an obair-ealain as fheàrr leat fhèin? And the size of the picture is enormous/remarkable: two metres high [in height] and more than a metre wide [in width]. That’s big! But that’s enough from me! What’s your favourite work of art?
Innsidh mi dhut: ‘Le Penseur’! No ‘Am Fear-smaoineachaidh’ ma chuireas mi ainm Gàidhlig air! I’ll tell you: ‘Le Penseur!’ Or ‘The Thinker'[Am Fear-smaoineachaidh], if I (can) give it a Gaelic name!
Tha mi eòlach air-san! ‘S e ìomhaigh umha a th’ ann! Tha fear na shuidhe le a ghàirdean air a shliasaid. Tha a smigead air cùlaibh a làimhe, agus e a’ smaoineachadh. Cò rinn sin? I know that/him! It’s a bronze statue! A man is sitting with his arm on his thigh. His chin is on his hand, and he’s thinking. Who made that?
‘S e an neach-ealain ainmeil Auguste Rodin a rinn e. Thathas ag ràdh gu bheil am fear sin, an ìomhaigh sin, a’ samhlachadh feallsanachd. It’s the famous artist Auguste Rodin who made it. It’s said that that man, that statue, symbolises philosophy.
