An dàrna turas: Dè na rudan eile a dhèanadh feum don àrainneachd?

Take two: What are the other things which would benefit the environment?

Let’s have a look at this conversation again.

Feumaidh sinn luchd–poileataigs a phutadh gus barrachd a dhèanamh. Ach dè na rudan eile a dhèanadh feum don àrainneachd? We have to press politicians to do more. But what are the other things which would benefit the environment?
Nach do bhruidhinn sinn mu dheidhinn lùth ath–nuadhachail? Didn’t we talk about renewable energy?
Bhruidhinn. Ged a tha muilnean–uisge air a bhith againn fad linntean, tha lùth dealain–uisge air a bhith againn còrr is ceud bliadhna. We did (talk). Even though we have had water mills for centuries, we’ve had hydro–electric power for more than a hundred years.
Agus tha sin air leth freagarrach do chruth–tìr na h–Alba. And that’s particularly suited to Scotland’s landscape/terrain.
Agus ged a tha muilnean–gaoithe air a bhith againn airson linntean, tha crainn–ghaoithe a’ gintinn lùth–gaoithe, air tìr agus far–thìr. And although we’ve had windmills for centuries, wind turbines are now generating wind–power, on land and offshore.
Chan eil mi cho cinnteach mu dheidhinn nam buannachdan às an lùth sin. Nam bheachd–sa tha tuathanasan–gaoithe grànda agus cunnartach do fhiadh–bheatha, na h–eòin gu h–àraidh. I’m not so sure of the advantages of that energy. In my opinion wind–farms are ugly and dangerous to wildlife, birds especially.
Sin na h–eas–bhuannachdan, ceart gu leòr. Ach tha sin nas fheàrr na cumhachd a bhios a’ tighinn bho chonnadh–fosail, no cumhachd niùclasach. Those are the disadvantages right enough. But that is better than power which comes from fossil fuels, or nuclear power.
Dè na rudan eile a dhèanadh feum? What are the other things which would be of use?
Bhruidhinn sinn mu ath–chuairteachadh, agus bidh mòran a’ dèanamh sin, gu h–àraidh le plastaig, stuthan meatailt agus pàipear—na rudan àbhaisteach. We talked about recycling, and many do that, especially with plastic, metal materials and paper—the usual things.
Tha mi a’ cluinntinn ‘ach’ a’ tighinn! Dè th’ ann? I’m hearing a ‘but’ coming! What is it?
Ach bu chòir dhuinn a bhith a’ smaoineachadh air ath–chleachdadh agus a bhith cùramach nar dòigh–beatha. An àite a bhith a’ ceannach fasan luath, ath–chleachd do chuid aodaich. But we should be thinking about reusing and being mindful/careful in our way of life. Instead of buying fast fashion—reuse your clothes.
Agus ath–chleachd, no càirich an uidheamachd a th’ againn. A bheil e gu feum ma bhios sinn ag ath–chuairteachadh pàipear ach a’ sadail a–mach glanadair–sùghaidh no fòn–làimhe gach dàrna bliadhna? And reuse, or repair the equipment we have. Is it of use if we are recycling paper but tossing out a vacuum cleaner or mobile phone every other year?
‘S e sin an stuth a thèid gu lìonadh–talmhainn agus a tha a’ milleadh na h–àrainneachd. That’s the stuff which goes to landfill and is ruining/destroying the environment.
Tha thu ceart. Ma tha sinn airson bhith so–sheasmhach nar beatha làitheil, feumaidh sinn a bhith a’ smaoineachadh mu na rudan sin. You’re right. If we are to be sustainable in our daily life, we have to be thinking about these things.
