Why not take a trip in the company of Calum MacIlleathain?

Hi-aye, feumaidh mi stad airson greim bìdh: tha an t-acras gam tholladh – quite literally, the hunger is making a hole in me – tha an t-acras gam tholladh.

Obh obh ‘Sporan Dhòmhnaill ‘s e cho gann’, dìreach mar a tha an t-òran ag ràdh, agus tha a h-uile coltas gu bheil mi fhèin gann de dh’airgead – short of money – gann de dh’airgead. Dè dhèanamaid às aonais sgillinn na dhà san latha th’ ann – mar a chuala sinn bho Joy na bu tràithe – Gnothach duine gun chèill, a’ dol gu fèill gun airgead.

Quiche, Brot le aran corc, brot le sgona agus caise

Chan eil sgillinn ruadh agam, ach tha sinn a’ gabhail Eko-an!

Eko-an – Gu dè air thalamh a tha sin? What on earth is that? – Gu dè air thalamh a tha sin? Agus càit am faigh mi an leithid?

Chaidh Coimhearsnachd Inbhir Èireann ann an sgìre Mhoireibh a stèidheachadh bho chionn còrr is seasgad bliadhna. Tha prionnsapalan spioradalachd agus dòigh beatha so-sheasmhach aig cridhe feallsanachd na coimhearsnachd.

Agus coltach rium fhèin, tha a’ choimhearsnachd seo gu mòr a’ creidsinn anns an dàimh eadar mac an duine agus nàdar,

Ach ciamar a tha saoghal cruaidh an airgid a’ tighinn ris a’ bheatha shocair seo?

Airson fuasgladh air a’ cheist sin, tha mi a’ coinneachadh ri Alex Walker.

Alex: well here they are!

Alex: The Eko is the community currency of the Findhorn Eco-village Project in north-east Scotland. The Eko is a local trading currency backed by pounds sterling investment and has been in circulation for 21 years [since 2002]. It is designed as a working alternative to £s sterling in economic transactions

Calum: why did you introduce your own currency?

Alex: to provide low cost financing for new projects through low interest loans and surpluses generated by the currency project itself

Calum: how much is an Eko worth and how and where can you use the Eko?

Alex: 1 Eko is worth £1 and several local businesses in the eco-village and in Findhorn accept it.

Calum: Could I borrow some of your Ekos?

Alex: No, you’ll have to earn your own.

Tha diofar phròiseactan is bhuidhnean ann am Baile Èireann air buannachd fhaighinn às an airgead shònraichte seo agus air a chur gu ruige rudan mar an crann-gaoithe seo agus taighean ionadail air prìs reusanta.

Ach tha mise a’ cur feum air Ekothan airson rudeigin nas pearsanta – mo bhrù a lìonadh! Agus feumaidh sinn cuimhneachadh, chan eil port an asgaidh ann! A great Gaelic phrase to explain that there’s no such thing as a free lunch – chan eil port an asgaidh ann!

Uill, thàinig orm mo lòn a chosnadh agus ‘s e a tha coimhead blasta. Agus Joy, fàgaidh mi thu le grèim airson do bheathachadh fhèin: cha dèanar obair gun bhiadh – work won’t be done without food – cha dèanar obair gun bhiadh.
