Air eagal 's …

For fear of…

As we’ve learned before, there are various ways to give a reason for doing something.

In addition to the options above, we can also use air eagal ‘s (for fear of, lest), leis (with that, since) and ri linn ‘s (consequently).

These structures are all followed by a subordinate clause using gu(n) … or nach …

Na bi a’ còcaireachd an seo air eagal ‘s gun dèan thu cron air an fheur.

Don’t cook here for fear of damaging the grass.

Cleachdaidh mi còmhdhail phoblach nas trice leis gu bheil sin nas fheàrr don àrainneachd.

I will use public transport more often because that’s better for the environment.

Cha deach i dhan phàrtaidh leis gun robh i sgìth.

She didn’t go to the party because she was tired.

As we saw with air sgàth, we can use ri linn followed by a noun in the genitive case:

Tha daoine a’ mothachadh a–nis ri linn na sìde.

People are noticing now because of the weather.

Dh’fhaodainn nas lugha feòil ithe air sgàth na h–àrainneachd.

I could eat less meat for the sake of the environment
