Prepositions with the genitive case

We have seen chun (to the) used throughout the course.

We learned in B1 Cuspair 15 that this is one of the few simple prepositions which cause nouns to be in the genitive case.

Two other prepositions which require the genitive case are (during, throughout, for the duration of), and far (off, from). Far is the same as bhàrr.

chun na h-aibhne

to the river

chun nan Eileanan an Iar

to the Western Isles

far an rathaid

off the road

far m’ obrach

off (my) work

rè a’ ghlasaidh-shluaigh

during (the) lockdown

rè an t-samhraidh

during the summer

A summary of the genitive case is given on 2A Duilleag Mìneachaidh.

Did you go anywhere during the summer this year?
