A PhD is a university degree at the highest level, recognised throughout the world, rooted in original research as well as challenging.
The majority of students are fascinated by (passionate about) a particular field of knowledge, and it is as a result of their academic interest, and the desire for research excellence, that they (wish to) pursue a PhD degree.
The Gaelic and Celtic Studies PhD offers students the opportunity to undertake research at a professional level in the different areas of Gaelic and Celtic Studies; to engage further in academic subjects; and to develop their abilities in writing, analysis and communication through the medium of Gaelic.
PhD students receive training in research skills and in academic writing skills in Gaelic as well as specific guidance according to their chosen field of knowledge.
In the Sabhal Mòr Library collections there is a wide range of scholarly resources to be found.
In the Special Collections of the college, there are excellent collections of old Gaelic books (printed) from the seventeenth century onwards, as well as important collections of antiquities and manuscripts including Gaelic, Celtic studies, folklore, traditional (material) culture, Highland history, Gaelic development, and piping history.
The university especially welcomes students who wish to make use of material from the college collections in their research.
