An dàrna turas: Iomadh còmhstri

Take two: Many conflicts

Let’s have a look at this conversation again.

Bha mi air mo shlighe a dh’Inbhir Nis, ‘s mi a’ dèanamh air Làrach Blàr Chùil Lodair. An uair sin thòisich mi a’ smaoineachadh— I was on my way to Inverness, and making for Culloden Battlefield. Then I started to think—
Òbh òbh! ‘S e rud cunnartach a tha sin! Cò mu dheidhinn a bha thu a’ smaoineachadh? Oh–oh! That’s a dangerous thing! What were you thinking about?
Bha mi a’ smaoineachadh air mar a thàinig cùisean mun cuairt gun deach bratach nan Seumasach a thogail aig Gleann Fhionnain ann an 1745. I was thinking about how things came about that the Jacobite flag was raised in Glenfinnan in 1745.
Seadh. Agus a bheil beachd agad air ciamar a ràinig cùisean an ìre sin? Uh–huh. And do you have an idea how things reached that stage?
Tha gu dearbh. Feumaidh tu a dhol air ais linntean ann an eachdraidh. Ach cha tèid mi cho fada air ais ri linn nan dìneasaran! I did indeed. You have to go back centuries in history. But I won’t go as far back as the age of the dinosaurs!
Ach smaoinich air Alba mar dhùthaich. Cha robh i mar sin bho riamh. But think about Scotland as a country. It wasn’t always like that.
Cha robh. Cuimhnich: ron bhliadhna 1493, b’ e dà rìoghachd a bh’ ann an Alba—Rìoghachd na h–Alba agus Rìoghachd nan Eilean. Agus bhiodh an dà Rìoghachd seo gu tric ann an ugannan a chèile. It wasn’t. Remember: before the year 1493, there were two kingdoms in Scotland—the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of the Isles. And those two kingdoms were often at each other’s throats.
Agus na dìochuimhnich na Cruithnich, na Ceiltich, agus na Lochlannaich. Bha iadsan ann roimhe sin, nach robh? And don’t forget the Picts, the Celts, and the Norse/Vikings. They were there before that, weren’t they?
Bha gu dearbh. Agus na dìochuimhnich na Gall–Ghàidheil nas motha. Thàinig iadsan beagan an dèidh sin. They were indeed. And don’t forget the Gall–Ghàidheil [Gall–Gaels/Norse–Gaels/foreigner–Gaels] either. They came a bit after that.
Agus an dèidh 1493 thàinig linn nan creach, le iomadh còmhstri, gu h–àraidh eadar diofar chinnidhean. Agus chùm sin a’ dol gu deireadh na seachdamh linn deug ‘s tràth san ochdamh linn deug le ar-a-machan eile nan Seumasach. And after 1493 came the age of plunder/forays, with many conflicts, especially between different clans. And that was ongoing until the end of the seventeenth century, and early in the eighteenth century with other Jacobite risings.
Agus an uair sin thachair Bliadhna Theàrlaich ann am meadhan na h–ochdamh linn deug. And then we have The Forty–five in the middle of the eighteenth century.
Cha robh siud dona nuair a smaoinicheas tu gun robh thu air do shlighe a dh’Inbhir Nis agus, nad inntinn, ann an cuideachd a’ Phrionnsa Bhòidhich ! That wasn’t bad when you think that you were on your way to Inverness and in your mind in the company of the Bonnie Prince!
