Tha barrachd fhlataichean is thaighean gan togail

More flats and houses are being built

We also saw examples of sentences with gam, gad, ga, and with mo, do, a, a (h-) before a verbal noun throughout A2 and B1.

Learners and speakers of Gaelic often go wrong between these two situations.

There are three situations where we use gam, gad, ga etc:

1. Where a pronoun is the object of the verbal noun:

A bheilthugamchreidsinn?gam chreidsinn, not a’ creidsinn mi
Areyouat mybelieving?Do you believe me?
Chan eilegadhèanamh.ga dhèanamh, not a’ dèanamh e
Isn’theat itsdoing.He isn’t doing it.

2. Where there is a continuous passive meaning:

Thatoglaichean ùragantogail.
Arenew buildingsat theirbuilding.New buildings are being built.
Thaiadgantogail
Aretheyat theirbuildingThey are being built.

3. Where there is movement:

Thamia’ dolathogailthaighean.
AmIgoingtobuildingof houses.I am going to build houses.
Thamia’ dolgantogail.
AmIgoingat theirbuilding. I am going to build them.
Chaidhmi gafhaighinn.
WentI at itsgetting. I went to get it.

We saw these two examples in the introduction:

Bha taighean ùra gan togail an uair sin …

New houses were being built then …

Tha barrachd fhlataichean is thaighean gan togail.
