Loneliness in the city

Iain Mac a’ Ghobhainn or ‘Iain Crichton Smith’, as he is better known in English, is renowned as a writer, in both Gaelic and English.

His stories are simple yet vivid and deal with big themes such as isolation, sympathy/empathy, language and culture.

Here we are going to look at his short story An Duine Dubh about life in the city.

The short story can be read on 5B Duilleag Obrach.

There is another link here.

After you have read the story, you can listen to it on YouTube.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the whole story! Tha thu a’ dèanamh fìor math—you’re doing really well!

If you don’t understand any words, try looking them up in your dictionary or the LearnGaelic faclair.

It’s well worth keeping a notebook (virtual or real!) to write down new vocabulary.
