Take two: What's so special about step-dancing?

An dàrna turas: Dè tha cho àraid mu dheidhinn dannsa-ceum?

Let's have a look at this conversation again.

Chan eil ach an Cuan Siar eadarainn, eadar Gàidhealtachd na h-Alba agus Alba Nuadh. Ach an i dìreach a' Ghàidhlig a tha co-ionnan?

There is only the Atlantic Ocean between us, between the Highlands of Scotland and Nova Scotia. But is it just Gaelic that is alike?

chat avatar

Chan i. Tha iomadh rud ann thall an Alba Nuadh a chì thu air Gàidhealtachd na h-Alba a tha coltach ri chèile. A dh'aindeoin sin, ge-tà, tha diofaran ann.

It isn't. There are many things over in Nova Scotia that you see in the Highlands of Scotland that are similar to each other. Despite that, though, there are differences.

chat avatar

Dè na rudan a tha sin?

What are those things?

Tha ceòl is òrain a thàinig a-nall bhon t-seann dùthaich aca co-ionnan, ach rinn na h-eilthirich agus an sliochd òrain is bàrdachd ùr cuideachd. Aithnichidh tu na fuinn agus an stoidhle, ge-tà.

The music and songs which came over from the old country the same, but the emigrants and their descendants made new songs and poetry as well. You'll recognise the tunes and the style, though.

Tha sin inntinneach.

That's interesting.

Tha tachartas aca ris an canar froilig-luaidh. Ann an Alba cha robh ach na boireannach ri luadh agus òrain luaidh, ach ann an Alba Nuadh b' iad na fir a bha ga dhèanamh! Na làithean seo, ge-tà, bidh a h-uile duine ga dhèanamh!

They have an event called a milling-frolic. In Scotland only the women did waulking and [sang] waulking songs, but in Nova Scotia it was the men! These days, though, everyone does it!

chat avatar

Abair e! Dè eile a th' aca?

You don't say! What else do they have?

chat avatar

Ma dh'fhaodte, no mar a theireadh iad, a theagamh, an rud as iomraitiche a th' aca, 's e dannsa-ceum.

Perhaps, or as they'd say, perhaps, the most well-known thing they have is step-dancing.

chat avatar

Tha dannsa Gàidhealach againne an seo. Dè tha cho àraid mu dheidhinn dannsa-ceum?

We've got Highland dancing here. What's so special about step-dancing?

chat avatar

Tha dannsa-ceum eadar-dhealaichte. Agus chaidh dannsa-ceum a-null a dh'Alba Nuadh leis na daoine, agus chaidh e à bith an seo an Alba, cha mhòr.

Step-dancing is different. And step-dancing went over to Nova Scotia with the people, and it died out here in Scotland, just about.

chat avatar

Obh, obh!

Oh dear!

chat avatar

Ach aig deireadh an fhicheadamh linn dh'ionnsaich dannsairean à Alba dannsa-ceum nuair a chaidh iad a-null. Thill iad a-nall an seo leis agus tha dannsa-ceum againn, às ùr, a-bhos an seo an Alba.

But at the end of the twentieth century dancers from Scotland learned step-dancing when they went over there. They returned here with it and they gave step-dancing back anew to Scotland.

Tha mi a' tuigsinn. Iongantach!

I get it [I understand]. Amazing!
