LUC:
Nach math gu bheil cuideigin toilichte. Dè a th’ air togail-inntinn a thoirt dhut a Rona? An deagh shìde? Bràmair ùr?
Isn’t it good that someone’s happy. What’s lifted your spirits, Rona? The good weather? A new partner?
RONA:
Chan eil cead aig a h-uile duine a bhith cho mi-mhodhail rium! Tha mi air bhioran ’s mi air cluinntinn gu bheil a’ mhòr-chuid de chlasaichean na fèise againn làn.
Not everyone’s allowed to be that rude to me! I’m excited as I’ve just heard that most of our fèis classes are full.
ALFIE:
Deagh naidheachd! A bheil sibh feumach air cuideachadh sam bith?
Great news! Do you need any help?
RONA:
Uill…. tha thusa math air seinn, nach eil?
Well… you’re good at singing, aren’t you?
ALFIE:
Is toil leam seinn agus tha mi eòlach air òrain Ghàidhlig. Nuair a bha mi san sgoil, dh’ionnsaich mi tòrr òrain airson farpaisean a’ Mhòid. Chaidh mo thogail-sa aig a’ Mhod!
I like drama, I can sing and I’m familiar with Gaelic songs. When I was in school, I learned a lot of songs for Mòd competitions. I was brought up on the Mòd!
RONA:
Nach ann dhutsa a rug an cat an cuilean!
Weren’t you the lucky one!
LUC:
Inns dhomh Alfie, dè an diofar eadar a bhith a’ gabhail pàirt ann am fèis seach a bhith a’ gabhail pàirt ann am Mòd?
Tell me, Alfie, what’s the difference between taking part in a fèis and taking part in the Mòd?
ALFIE:
Uill… aig Mòd bidh thu ullaichte airson pàirt a ghabhail ann am farpais. Bidh agad ri dhol air àrd-urlar mu choinneamh bhritheamhan, luchd-èisteachd agus ma bhuannaicheas tu, camarathan telebhisein.
Well… at the Mòd you prepare to take part in a competition. You have to go on stage in front of judges, an audience and if you win, tv cameras.
LUC:
Agus fèis?
And a fèis?
ALFIE:
Bidh cothrom ann a dhol air àrd-urlar aig fèis cuideachd, ach cha bhi farpais ann. Tha deagh chothrom ann an sin do sgilean fhèin a leasachadh agus feadhainn ùra ionnsachadh.
You get the chance to go on stage at a fèis as well, but there’s no competition. It’s a good chance to develop your own skills and learn some new ones.
LUC:
Dè a b’ fheàrr leat fhèin? An rachadh tu chun a’ Mhòid a-rithist?
What would you prefer? Would you go to the Mòd again?
ALFIE:
Chan eil mi cinnteach. Tha tòrr obair ullachaidh mu choinneamh.
I’m not sure. A lot of preparation is required.
ALFIE:
Haoi a Rona, ‘s ann às an Òban a tha thusa, nach ann?
Rona, you’re from Oban, aren’t you?
RONA:
‘S ann agus moiteil às!
I am and proud of it!
ALFIE:
Is tric a chuala mi daoine ag ràdh cho math ‘s a tha an t-Òban a’ còrdadh riutha-san airson Mòd Nàiseanta.
I’ve often heard people say how good Oban is for a National Mòd.
RONA:
Hmmm, cha robh fhios am air a sin.
Hmmm, I didn’t know that.
LUC:
Nach do ghabh thu pàirt a-riamh?
Did you ever take part?
RONA:
Cha do ghabh; cha robh ùidh agam sa leithid nuair a bha mi san sgoil.
No, I wasn’t interested in things like that when I was in school.
LUC:
Agus seall ortsa a-nise – a’ cur fèis Ghàidhlig air dòigh!
And look at you now – setting up a Gaelic fèis!
RONA:
Tha mi a’ dèanamh mo dheagh dhìcheall ach chuirinn feum air oide eile airson clasaichean seinn.
I’m trying my best but I could do with another singing tutor.
ALFIE:
Chan eil an dearbh leadaidh fad air falbh.
The very lady isn’t far away.
RONA:
Huh?
Huh? (What do you mean?)
ALFIE:
Math air seinn! Brosnachail! Na ceudan de shàr òrain Ghàidhlig aice air a teanga!
Good at singing! Inspirational! Hundreds of Gaelic songs on the tip of her tongue!
RONA:
Bhiodh e math coinneachadh rithe-se! An aithne dhuinn an leadaidh thàlantach seo?
It would be good to meet her! Do we know this talented lady?
ALFIE:
’S aithne… ach ‘s e a’ cheist, am bi ise deònach cùl a chur ris na currain…
We do… but the question is will she be willing to turn her back on the carrots…
RONA & LUC:
Seonag!
