Fèis Bharraigh

The Barra Festival

Ged a tha san latha an–diugh Fèisean Ionadail a’ tachairt air feadh na dùthcha agus air feadh na bliadhna, thòisich an iomairt, no am pròiseact, ris an canar Fèisean nan Gàidheal ann am Barraigh sa bhliadhna 1981.

B’ e an sagart ainmeil Maighstir Cailean MacAonghais a ghabh beachd an toiseach air fèis a chur air dòigh ann am Barraigh a chionn ‘s nach robh mòran den òigridh [a bha] comasach air inneal–ciùil a chluiche, no gu dearbha air Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn mar a b’ àbhaist.

Bha Maighstir Cailean airson ceòl, òrain, dualchas agus cànan nan Gàidheal a bhrosnachadh am measg na h–òigridh, agus nach e a shoirbhich leis an iomairt!

Tha Fèisean a–nis anns a h–uile ceàrnaidh den dùthaich, eadar bailtean–mòra agus eileanan beaga bìodach.

Bhon a’ chiad Fhèis ann am Barraigh, tha am mapa seo air an taobh cheart a’ sealltainn mar a tha gluasad nam fèisean air fàs air feadh na dùthcha.

Although nowadays local Fèisean take place all over the country and throughout the year, the enterprise, or (the) project, known as Fèisean nan Gàidheal began in Barra in 1981.

It was the famous priest Maighstir Cailean MacAonghais (Father Colin MacInnes) who had the idea to organise a fèis in Barra because not many of the young people had the ability to play an instrument, or to speak Gaelic as used to be the case.

Maighstir Cailean wanted to promote the music, songs, culture and the language of the Gael among the youth, and what a success his venture was!

There are fèisean now in every corner of the country, from cities to tiny islands.

From the first Fèis in Barra, this map shows how the fèisean movement has grown throughout the country.
