Na Fuadaichean

Na Fuadaichean Gaelic

'S mathaid gum b' iad Na Fuadaichean, no Fuadaichean nan Gàidheal, an tachartas a bu mhiosa ann an sreath de thachartasan a thug buaidh mhòr air a' Ghàidhlig agus cultar nan Gàidheal.

Dh'ionnsaich sinn beagan mu Rìoghachd nan Eilean ann am B1 Cuspair 17 agus mu Na Seumasaich ann an Cuspair 24.

B' iad Na Stiùbhartaich a thòisich an iomairt gus cànan agus cultar na Gàidhlig a sguabadh às a' Ghàidhealtachd an dèidh do Sheumas IV a dhol a-mach air Tighearnan nan Eilean.

Lean Seumas VI air nuair a chuir e buidheann de Ghoill à Fìobha a dh'ionnsaigh Leòdhais gus a thuineachadh ann an 1598.

Nuair nach do dh'obraich sin, thugadh Reachdan Ì a-steach ann an 1609 's iad ag amas air a' Ghàidhealtachd a cheannsachadh agus a' Bheurla a stèidheachadh mar chànan na h-urracha mòra.

Thàinig air na h-uachdarain co-dhiù am mac as sine aca a chur gu sgoiltean air a' Ghalltachd gus an ionnsaicheadh iad Beurla agus dòigh-beatha Ghallta.

Chuir na Reachdan casg cuideachd air na filidhean, na bàird Ghàidhlig, a bha a' cumail dualchas na Gàidhlig beò.

Mar a dh'ionnsaich sinn na bu tràithe sa chùrsa, bha buaidh mhòr an uair sin aig Blàr Chùil Lodair agus Achd an Toirmisg, a bhris Siostam nan Cinnidhean gu tur.

'S e Siostam Fiùdalach a chuireadh air dòigh na àite, uachdaran le sealbh air an talamh agus na tuatha a' pàigheadh màl dhaibh.

Chruthaich seo an suidheachadh a rinn Na Fuadaichean comasach do na h-uachdarain agus thòisich iad a' cur nan daoine far an fhearainn, uaireannan le àrdachadh màil nach gabhadh pàigheadh, uaireannan le fòirneart agus droch-dhìol.

The Clearances English

It is possible that Na Fuadaichean (The Clearances), or Fuadaichean nan Gàidheal (The Highland Clearances), was the worst event in a series of events that had a great impact on the Gaelic language and the culture of the Gaelic people.

We learned a little about Rìoghachd nan Eilean (The Lordship of the Isles) in B1 Topic 17 and about Na Seumasaich (The Jacobites) in Topic 24.

It was the Stuarts who started the campaign to wipe out the Gaelic language and culture from the Highlands after James IV fell out with the Lords of the Isles.

James VI continued when he sent a group of Goill (Lowlanders) from Fife to to attack Lewis to settle it in 1598.

When that didn't work, Reachdan Ì (The Statutes of Iona) were introduced in 1609 with the aim of conquering the Highlands and establishing English as the language of the powers that be.

The landowners had to send at least their eldest son to schools in the Lowlands so that they could learn English and the Lowland way of life.

The Statutes also banned the filidhean, the Gaelic poets, who kept the Gaelic heritage alive.

As we learned earlier in the course, Blàr Chùil Lodair (the Battle of Culloden) and Achd an Toirmisg (The Act of Proscription) had a major consequences which completely broke Siostam nan Cinnidhean (the Clan System).

It was a Siostam Fiùdalach (a feudal system) that was set up in its place, a landlord with ownership of the land and the tenants/people paying them rent.

This created the situation that made The Clearances possible for the landlords and they began to put the people off the land, sometimes with an increase in rent that could not be paid, sometimes with violence and abuse.
