Às a' cheud

Percent

If we are going to talk about finance and keep an eye on the interest rate(s) or the rate of inflation, we will need a little more vocabulary about counting and numeracy/numbering in Gaelic.

We should now be comfortable enough with (the) numbers at this stage, but decimal numbers and percentages are needed to talk about money and about finance.

às a’ cheud

percent

a’ mhòr-chuid (f)

the majority

a dhà uimhir

twice as many/much

ceudad (m)

percentage

a’ bheag-chuid (f)

the minority

an treas cuid

a third

puing (f)

point

cuid mhath

a good amount

cairteal (m)

a quarter

We learned about àireamhan òrdail (ordinal numbers) before, but we can use them with cuid (share, part) to talk about amount (or size), or parts of something: an treas cuid (a third) no (the third part).

Decimal numbers are simple enough.

We use puing for ‘point’ and the the numbers that we already know.

ÀIREAMHAN DEICHEACH | DECIMAL NUMBERS

1.2aon puing a dhà
2.3dà puing a trì

8.9ochd puing a naoi
9.01naoi puing neoni a h-aon

For ceudadan (percentages), we add às a’ cheud after the number:
