An dàrna turas: Tha e a' tighinn riut!

Take two: It suits you!

Let’s have a look at this conversation again.

Sin thu fhèin, Anna. Thig a–steach agus cuir dhìot do chòta. ‘S toigh leam an dath—tha e a’ tighinn riut! There you are, Anna. Come in and take off your coat. I like the colour—it suits you!
Tapadh leatsa, a Mhàiri. Chan eil ann ach seann chòta. Leis an uisge bha mi feumach air rud practaigeach, plèin, dìonach an–diugh. Thank you, Màiri. It’s just an old coat. With the rain I needed something practical, plain and waterproof today.
Tha fios ’am. Ò, ‘s toigh leam an lèine–t agad! Tha i cho dathach is fasanta. ‘S toigh leam an stoidhle agad. Am bi thu a’ leantainn fasan? I know. Oh, I like your t–shirt! It’s so colourful and fashionable. I like your style. Do you follow fashion?
Bidh agus cha bhi! Bidh mi leantainn na bhios a’ tachairt. I do and I don’t! I follow what’s happening.
A bheil fasan cudromach dhut? Is fashion important to you?
Tha gu ìre. Tha fios ’am dè bhios anns an fhasan, agus dè bhios às an fhasan. Ach chan eil sin a’ ciallachadh gum bi mi ga leantainn. It is to an extent. I know what’s in fashion, and what’s out of fashion. But that doesn’t mean that I follow it.
Tha mi a’ tuigsinn. Tha mi fiosrach air an aodach leòmach, spaideil agus cosgail a bhios daoine a’ ceannach am–bliadhna. Ach ‘s fheàrr leam a bhith a’ leantainn na stoidhle agam fhèin, fasan ann no às! I understand. I’m knowledgeable about posh, smart and expensive clothes which people are buying this year. But I prefer to follow my own style, in or out of fashion.
Dè seòrsa aodaich as toigh leat, ma–thà? What kind of clothes do you like, then?
‘S toigh leam seann aodach snasail. Tha sin a’ ciallachadh gum bi an t–aodach agam às an fhasan, mar as trice. Ach tha mi coma! I like old elegant clothes. That means that my clothes will be out of fashion, usually. But I’m not bothered about that [I’m indifferent to that].
‘S toigh leamsa seann stoidhlean cuideachd. Cha cheannaichinn aodach ùr dìreach air sgàth ‘s gu bheil e ùr. I like old styles as well. I wouldn’t buy new clothing just because it’s new.
‘S fìor thoigh leam aodach air a dhèanamh à snàithlichean nàdarra: clòimh, cotan agus anart. Cheannaich mi seacaid a’ Chlò Hearach [a’ Chlò Mòr] anns a’ bhùth–charthannais a’ bhòn–dè, seacaid bhrèagha dhonn. Cha robh dad ceàrr oirre ach toll beag sa mhuinchill. I really like clothes which are made of natural fibres: wool, cotton and linen. I bought a Harris Tweed jacket in the charity shop the day before yesterday, a beautiful brown jacket. The only thing wrong with it was a small hole in the sleeve.
Seacaid dhonn le toll beag sa mhuinchill? Sin seacaid mo sheanar! Chuir mi a–steach i Disathairne. Seo a–nise! Bidh an Clò Hearach san fhasan gu bràth! A brown jacket with a small hole in the sleeve? That’s my grandfather’s jacket! I put it in on Saturday. Harris Tweed will be in fashion for ever!
