A' toirt ar dualchais do ar n–òigridh

Bringing our heritage to our youth

Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s slogan is A’ toirt ar dualchais do ar n–òigridh (Bringing our heritage to our youth).

We have learnt the word dualchas (heritage, tradition) in the course, but here it is in the genitive (possessive) case: dualchais.

Do you know why?

A’ toirt ar dualchais

We have learned that nouns which follow a verbal noun should be in the genitive case.

In modern Gaelic this should only be done with definite nouns:

Bidh mi a’ seinn na pìoba aig an fhèis!

I will be playing the pipes at the festival!

Bha e a’ sgrìobhadh an leabhair ‘son na cloinne.

He was writing the book for the children.

However, when we use a possessive adjective like mo, or ar, this makes the following noun definite ar dualchas.

Tha an Fhèis a’ toirt ar dualchais do ar n–òigridh.

The Fèis is bringing our heritage to our youth.

Bha mi a’ gnogadh mo chinn.

I was nodding my head.

Tha iad a’ teagasg na [h–òigridh] cloinne.

They are teaching the [young people] children.

Tha iad a’ teagasg ar [n–òigridh] cloinne

They are teaching our [young people] children.

DÈ DO BHEACHD? | WHAT DO YOU THINK?

A bheil fèis no tachartas a’ gabhail àite faisg air far a bheil thusa a’ fuireach?

Is there a fèis or event that happens near where you live?

Ma tha fèis faisg ort, cò ris a tha sin coltach?

If there is (a festival near you), what is it like?

Carson a tha Fèisean nan Gàidheal cho cudromach nad bheachd–sa?

Why are Fèisean nan Gàidheal so important, in your opinion?
