Gur e … gur ann …

That it is … that it is in

We have seen in SpeakGaelic A1 and A2 how to link dependent clauses with gu bheil | nach eil.

For the past tense, we learnt to link these clauses with gun robh | nach robh.

And for the future tense we learnt to use gum bi | nach bi.

We have also used this pattern with other verbs, for example gun tèid | nach tèid.

We can use the same pattern to link a dependent clause which starts with ‘S e | Chan e and ‘S ann | Chan ann.

Tha mi a’ smaointinn + ‘S e an fhìrinn a th’ agad an sin.

I think + It’s the truth you have there.

Tha mi a’ smaointinn gur e an fhìrinn a th’ agad an sin.

I think that it’s the truth you have there.

Tha mi an dòchas + ‘S e seo an taigh-òsta!

I am hoping + This is the hotel!

Tha mi an dòchas gur e seo an taigh-òsta!

I hope that this is the hotel!

Saoilidh mi + ‘S ann air an trèan(a) a thig iad.

I think + It’s on the train that they will come.

Saoilidh mi gur ann air an trèan(a) a thig iad.

I think that it’s on the train they’ll come.

Chuala mi + ‘S ann air a’ bhàt’-aiseig a thàinig iad.

I heard. + It’s on the ferry they came.

Chuala mi gur ann air a’ bhàt’-aiseig a thàinig iad.

I heard that that it’s on the ferry they came.

Tha mi a’ smaointinn + Chan e an fhìrinn a th’ agad an sin.

I think + It’s not the truth you have there.

Tha mi a’ smaointinn nach e an fhìrinn a th’ agad an sin

I think that it’s not the truth you have there.

Tha mi an dòchas + Chan e seo an taigh-òsta!

I am hoping + This is not the hotel!

Tha mi an dòchas nach e seo an taigh-òsta!

I hope that this is not the hotel!

Saoilidh mi + Chan ann air an trèan(a) a thig iad.

I think + It’s not on the train that they will come.

Saoilidh mi nach ann air an trèan(a) a thig iad.

I think that it’s not on the train they’ll come.

Chuala mi + Chan ann air a’ bhàt’-aiseig a thàinig iad.

I heard. + It’s not on the ferry they came.

Chuala mi nach ann air a’ bhàt’-aiseig a thàinig iad.

I heard that it’s not on the ferry they came.

As we see in these examples we use ‘S e | Chan e when a noun is linked directly, whereas ‘S ann | Chan ann are typically used with a preposition:
