Carson a roghnaich thu fhèin an cuspair sin?

Why did you (yourself) choose that subject?

Let’s have a look at this discussion. By the end of this section, you will have learned some valuable phrases that you can use in lots of different conversations.

Nach innis thu dhomh? Dè an cuspair a tha thu a’ beachdachadh a rannsachadh? Won’t you tell me? What subject are you considering researching?
‘S e foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig a th’ ann! It’s Gaelic-medium education!
‘S e cuspair air leth inntinneach a th’ ann gun teagamh. Carson a roghnaich thu fhèin an cuspair sin? It is a very interesting subject without a doubt. Why did you (yourself) choose that subject?
Bha mi fortanach gun deach mo thogail le Gàidhlig san dachaigh. Ach … gu mì-fhortanach cha d’ fhuair mi Foghlam tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig nuair a bha mi fhìn san sgoil. I was fortunate in that I was brought up with Gaelic at home. But … unfortunately I didn’t get Gaelic medium education when I was at school.
Ach tha thu a’ teagasg aig a’ cholaiste tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig, nach eil? But you teach at the college through the medium of Gaelic, don’t you?
Tha, agus tha sin a’ còrdadh rium, ach ‘s e cleachdadh agus eòlas gu tur eadar-dhealaichte a tha sin. Yes, and I like that (I’m fond of that), but that is a completely different experience and practice.
Tha mi a’ tuigsinn. Leis gu bheil an dithis chloinne agam a chaidh gu cròileagain agus a-nis bun-sgoil tron Ghàidhlig, tha ùidh agam fhìn ann an dà-chànanas, agus mar a thogas clann òg cànan agus diofar chànanan, ma gheibh iad an cothrom. I understand. Since I have two children who went to cròileagain (playgroups) and now primary school with Gaelic, I myself am interested in bilingualism, and how young children pick up a language and different languages, if they get the opportunity.
Sin e dìreach! Agus tha mi airson rannsachadh a dhèanamh mar a tha clann aig nach eil Gàidhlig a-staigh ga h-ionnsachadh san sgoil. That’s it! And I want to research how children who don’t have Gaelic at home learn it at school.
Tha mi a’ smaoineachadh gu bheil fios aig a’ mhòr chuid gu bheil buannachdan ann, ach chan eil am foghlam sin gun dùbhlain. I think most people know that there are benefits, but that education is not without challenges.
Ciamar a bhios luchd-teagaisg a’ leasachadh nan neartan agus a’ dèiligeadh leis na laigsean a tha na chois? How do teachers develop the strengths and deal with the weaknesses that come with it?
Saoilidh mi gu bheil daoine a’ faicinn dà-chànanas mar annas san dùthaich seo—gu ìre—ach ‘s e an àbhaist air feadh an t-saoghail! I think that people see bilingualism as a rarity/oddity in this country—to some extent—but it is the norm all over the world!
‘S e duilgheadas a tha sin gun teagamh. Ach, aig a’ cheann thall, tha mise taingeil gu bheil sinn air gluasad air falbh bhon nòisean gu bheil dà-chànanas na chnap-starra! ‘S e gibht a th’ ann! That’s a difficulty, of course. But, in the end, I am grateful that we have moved away from the notion that bilingualism is an obstacle! It’s a gift!
